Pearls

Before I started to make jewellery, I was not that bothered by Pearls. I could take them or leave them - they seemed a bit too expensive anyway. I have SO changed my mind!! I ordered some as they seem popular and I wanted to be able to sell some of the things I make.
I LOVE them- no photograph can do them Justice. I have made a few necklaces and bracelets by using wire for rosary links , I thought it was time I learned to how to Knot them.
It took a few attempts to get it right but once you get into the rythum, it soon comes along.

I do need to get my silk quantity right first as this was not as long as I wanted to make it at 16 inches.

I love the lustre.

I had no idea there were so many types of pearls either. The pink ones above are shell pearls. Googles definition of shell pearls are : Man made Sea Shell Pearls are created by repeatedly dipping a round matrix bead into a glowing, brilliantly colored solution of binders and crushed mother of pearl. They are polished and dipped, again and again, until they reach the size desired. They are very heavy, often much heavier than real pearls.

These are all natural cultured freshwater pearls and they come in so many shapes and sizes ( and prices) . If you are interested here is a link to the names and qualities of the different types . There are also lots of imitation pearls around too, some like the swarovski crystal pearls are quite lovely and are also expensive.

  1. The pink pearls are lovely Sue.
Getting the knots right sounded tricky but the end result was well worth the hustle I think.

  2. They are beautiful:-) If you ever go to Jersey, there is a pearl place there, can't for the life of me remember its name!!! You can pay to pick an oyster from the tank and they will open it and the pearl inside is yours - it is a set up of course, but still a fun thing to do :-)

  3. The pearls are beautiful - well done with the knotting.
I have my late Mother-in-laws pearls and it cost me £50 to get them restrung & knotted about 12 years ago.
